CATCH | HONG KONG
Agile Hospitality in the Heart of Quarry Bay
Situated in the industrial-meets-corporate pulse of Quarry Bay, Catch is a study in spatial agility. The brief required a sophisticated "chronotypical" transition: a bright, energetic Australian-style hub serving the business clientele by day, evolving into an intimate, atmospheric cocktail destination after work.
The spatial journey begins immediately at the threshold, where a monolithic bar is positioned at the front of the space. This strategic placement anchors the venue, acting as a high-energy focal point for morning espresso while serving as a moody, glowing beacon that draws guests in from the streetscape at night. Working within a disciplined, limited footprint, the design utilises a Soft Brutalist material palette to bridge the gap between "Australian Fresh" honesty and Hong Kong intensity. A textured concrete facade and industrial glass block work create a semi-translucent boundary that floods the entrance with natural light by day and transforms the venue into a glowing lantern by night.
To soften the hard architectural shell, a series of generous arched thresholds guide the eye from the bar through to the rest of the venue. Despite the compact constraints, surgical spatial planning allowed for the seamless integration of a high-output commercial kitchen behind the scenes. Every millimetre was maximised through the use of curved joinery, vertical shelving, and a materiality of warm timber and salmon-toned ceramics that echo the seafood-centric roots of the menu. Catch is a space that breathes with the morning crowd and settles into a sophisticated glow for the evening, proving that even the most restricted spaces can achieve a sense of monumental ease.

Establishing a bold presence in a busy commercial district, this facade uses rugged concrete textures and industrial metal framing to create an inviting, high-visibility portal.

Strategic use of expansive industrial glazing and simple branding connects the restaurant's interior energy with the bustling Hong Kong streetscape.

The heart of the space features bespoke joinery designed for high-performance service, integrating a tiered bottle display within a modern, cantilevered shelving system.

Dramatic tiled archways and circular wall sconces are utilised to soften the raw industrial bones, creating an intimate, framed view of the vibrant bar activity.

The hardworking bar highlights the project's tactile materiality, pairing cool metal textures and glass blocks with Japanese-style vertical tiles for an artisan finish.

Strategic bar layout and spatial planning ensure a seamless flow between high-traffic service zones and communal dining areas, grounded by warm timber flooring and soft architectural curves.

A sculptural rendered archway creates a sophisticated portal between zones, using soft curves and orb lighting to balance the raw textures of the restaurant.

Maximising the dining footprint, these bespoke leather banquettes are paired with traditional seating and a curated display of artisanal objects for a warm, residential feel.

Utilising softened glass blocks and sheer floor-to-ceiling drapery, this design artfully screens off the external alleyway while flooding the dining room with diffused, natural light.

Supporting a premium international seafood menu, the project’s tactile materiality and refined lighting provide a sophisticated backdrop for a lasting experience.

Designed for seamless service, the dining area integrates custom leather banquette seating and strategic acoustic treatments to maintain a high-energy yet comfortable atmosphere.

Careful seating plans meant that this furniture layout could be as flexible as needed to accommodate parties, large bookings and quick table turnovers.

This restaurants offer is a day to night operation where the brief of the space was to seamlessly change into a night venue once the busy brunch and lunch shifts were over.

Reflecting the project’s focus on tactile luxury, the custom tableware and refined lighting serve as a curated backdrop for the restaurant’s artisanal, seafood-driven menu.
